  • Roles of IEIs

The primary role of IEIs is to ensure that graduates from their institutions obtain technical knowledge and skills that are relevant to specific industries to make them marketable or become entrepreneurs. IEIs will expand access to education at all levels by providing credible and attractive alternatives to university education; thus addressing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) bottleneck. IEIs will be listed in the JAMB Brochure for admission documentation purposes and students who have completed the Senior Secondary School and obtained 5 credits at NECO or WAEC are qualified to apply and sit for UTME. On completion of eighteen months programme taught in modules, a graduate from the IEI will be required to pass prescribed professional examinations and be awarded a National Innovation Diploma (NID in an area of specialization.

The Innovation Enterprise Institutions (IEIs) took off as an initiative of the Department of Tertiary Education in 2007. The actual roll out of the institutions could not commence in that year due to funding and logistics constraints.

IEIs are private sector driven institutions that teach practical skills linked to the needs of specific industry (tailoring, fashion design, software design, foundry, leather works, hospital etc) to create a one-stop career centre for products from the secondary education level who chose the acquisition of professional skills, or provide alternative route to tertiary education for others.

IEIs seek to educate graduates of senior secondary schools to use their talents and creativity to transform knowledge into wealth as well as a broader economic base for the country. The training emphasizes the development of innovations using innate abilities and ensures that graduates understand how their expertise fits into improving the society and fulfilling national goals.

    IEIs shall:

Advance private investment in technical and vocational education (TVET)

    Empower youths with skills

    - Innovation Enterprise Institution are technical institutions offering post-secondary education programmes leading to the award of diplomas/certificates such as the National Diploma of IEIs (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND). The products of these institutions will have entry level employment skills to function as technicians, higher technicians/technologists or professionals, depending on the level of training in their fields of specialization.
